The supersummary = the current Dept. of Justice lawsuit against big tobacco might create the next big hunk of money that hits the streets to fight tobacco. (like the Master Settlement Agreement). The goal = Community of color groups and LGBT groups have banded together to say, "our communities have been targeted by big tobacco for this problem -- so make sure you also target us with some of the money that comes from this lawsuit." In short, "we've been targeted for the problem, so target us for the fix." We're calling this group The Parity Alliance. What is happening now?August 2006 - The DC court has issued a ruling - which condemns the tobacco industry for a host of malicious practices but claims the current laws allow for little or no recompense for these activities. Which organizations are official intervenors? TFK, ANR, ALA, ACS, AHA, and the National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (but don't call them, cause they already know!) Want background? Read this great 411 document on the DOJ lawsuit by the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium. Want press? See this bit from Gay City News on the effort. |
