About Scout

Scout is me.  I am an independent lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health consultant in my pro life.  On the amateur side, I'm a husband to one and a father to three.  This whole clan lives in Lincoln, Rhode Island, an old mill town where we can walk to lots, and where Beth down at the grocery store was one of the first to ask if I'd defended my dissertation.  We've got a garden in our backyard that gets bigger every year, three pet chickens, and we're really grooving on the balance of small town life with easy access to cities.  In my years here, I've discovered a love for the tried and true New England hobby of trashpicking.  What?  Trash?  OK, think of it as recycling.  Or gleaning if you're in France.  For me it's free stuff every morning, and it's the place where I found the wedding ring I gave to Susanna.

Yes, I did say three kids.  I got three little mugwumpers that wear me ragged and make me happy.  Catch all of five of us some early morning as we hop on our bikes and head out to the local towpath.  And - tandems rule!

Dr. Scout is the Director of the National LGBT Tobacco Control Network and an independent health consultant specializing in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health, tobacco, social determinants of health, health disparities, and HIV.   In 2005 he completed his Ph.D. from Columbia ’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City .  The dissertation, Social Determinants of Transgender Health, breaks new ground in exploring a little-understood population within the lens of discrimination and stigma.  Scout has been consulting with different community-based health organizations since 1994, providing a range of technical assistance.  Activities include: evaluating a Special Project of National Significance at Fenway Community Health; participating with the Parity Alliance task force to pursue tobacco litigation opportunities for LGBT and communities of color; conducting a series of HIV needs assessments for different Eligible Metropolitan Areas across the east coast, and facilitating the first ever statewide transgender political meeting for New York State .  Scout hails from a small town in Rhode Island where he’s usually the only transgender father of three kids at the PTA meetings.
